Joseph Warren Stilwell (March 19, 1883 – October 12, 1946) was a United States Army general who served in the China Burma India Theater during World War II. His caustic personality was reflected in the nickname "Vinegar Joe". He also had the nickname "Uncle Joe." Orde Charles Wingate (b. Feb. 26, 1903, India-d. March 24, 1944, India), Major-General in the British Army, received his gunnery officer's commission in 1923. He saw action in the 1936-1939 Arab revolt in Palestine, and during the Second World War in the East African campaign and the Burma campaign. He was an early ardent supporter of Zionism.
